Hi,

I was just planning on buying a Dell Precision M6500 laptop and win7-64 with a nVidia Quadro FX 3800M which I intend to use for Houdini and renderman. Opinions and see if some one else has been using it and whether there may be any known compatibility issues. is it wise to put the license server on a laptop to.

thanks

Wow, that's awfully expensive for what you get (assuming the $4,000 model with Core i7 720QM). I've not used that particular model but it should work just fine for Houdini. If purchasing the Workstation license of Houdini you'd have to install the license server locally which is the normal. If using a Network license of Houdini it'd only work if you were on the network that has the license server (which wouldn't be on the laptop most likely), or through a VPN so the laptop would see the license server as if it were local. Cheers!

I have master networklicence, well after starting using i7 920 it,s sad to open my old laptop. most worried if a new get stolen or drops, havent looked into on how to configure network so I can dial upp and have licence from home, that will solve that problem! i will read up on that and try, before i buy. anyone using similar setup in a small company?

thanks for info.

I have the M6500 laptop with Windows 7 and use Houdini but not renderman. The program runs well but one factor you may want to consider is the latop has a serious design flaw (for me). The laptop has very sharp corners and because of the way the keyboard is positioned (not in center because it has a 10 key pad in addition to QWERTY) your left wrist hits the sharp corner and over time it is really annoying to be stabbed by your laptop... after paying almost $6K!

I urge you to look at this carefully before buying. Good luck.
