I guess you are using the Copy SOP to place the planks on a line.
In that case look into Copy Stamping and how to use the rand() hscript function togehter with it. By using stamp() in a transform node you can translate the different planks random amounts.

This is either a really smart move or by far the stupidest thing that we have ever tried.
