Hi everybody,

I have a problem or an issue and I hope to get some help , advice, Link or anything. I am about to use H12 Apprentice to study. Sidefx has made some changes since H11. So its really hard to follow some Tutorials represented online. How do I get a really good! Subsurfacescattering Effect using Physical SSS or other shaders in H12 ??? No matter what I do adjust dont get the desired Effect. The desired Effect should be like in the Tutorial from Georges Nakhle. In his Tutorial he uses Point Clouds to deside about how deep he wants to the rays of Light enter the Object. I have generated such a pointcloud aswell. He also uses Multi SSS as the main shader in his shadertree. But in H12 Apprentice Multi SSS is not accessable (or I dont know how to activate or find  it). Well I have rendered the same scenery with my own materials (material shader builder)...but I get an awful result. I am pretty sure its because of the features inside the Multi SSS, features like: RGB Evaluation , Pointcloud Sample, Scattering Distance, Bounce Attenuation. These Features (Nodes/OPs) I am missing in H12 and in the Material shader builder. So people how to get a very very good SSS (like juice in a Glas) Effect in Mantra H12 ?? (No matter if Raytrace or PBR)

Thanks for listen

even though they are deprecated and you should be using physical SSS you can still access multiSSS and singleSSs shaders
just unhide them by writing this to textport
opunhide Vop multiSSS
opunhide Vop singleSSS

Hello there,

I am also trying to reproduce this tutorial using Houdini 12. I have unhidden the single/multiSSS in the textport, but I am already stuck when it comes to generate the point cloud using the SSS Scatter node. I am doing just like in the tutorial but I have no points showing and the node displays an error.

I am coming from Cinema 4D to Houdini for better SSS renders, so no doubt I am going to get stuck in a few places along the way.

Should I continue trying to create a point cloud and follow along the tutorial or should I be using the Physical SSS?

Many thanks for any help you may have for me,

MikeNZ

Hihi,

I am still getting the error message while using the generated point cloud.... I am not really sure but I think the problem is 1. where the pcloud is saved and 2. the way u name it for rendering out...

But I am not even sure....

A good advice is needed

hi,
i think the SSS scatter is busted in h12, if you go inside the *_LocalVar nodes are throwing errors. I've attached a hip file with the nodes modified. You just need to write in the correct attributes and declare them as detail attributes. just refer to the h11 version of the node if you need a reference. That should generate the points you need (at least I think it should work!), good luck
