  1. Tonight, in rainy Vancouver, 'tis VHUG! https://www.facebook.com/groups/226198360751/ 6:45pm at Animal Logic! Cheers, Peter B
  2. Hi, Passing along for Andrew: The last VHUG of the year is on Dec 7th at Lost Boys School: 1825 Victoria Diversion, 7pm. I'll be presenting development I've done in music generated by flip fluid sims. Ivan DeWolf will also be presenting something awesome but not sure what it is yet. Cheers, Peter B
  3. Andrew has announced the last VHUG for 2015: Hi VHUG! We've got our final VHUG meeting of the year in two weeks. It will be held at MPC, Wednesday, December 9th from 7pm-9pm. We've also got two awesome presenters lined up. Sujil and Filippo will be showing their big Houdini tricks! NOTE: I have no involvement currently with this so please look on the Facebook page (whatever "Facebook" is) if you have questions/comments Cheers, Peter B
  4. Thanks Timur, I have also used the RULES to ask questions I have gotten it all working with Houdini now, it's very cool. Cheers, Peter B
  5. Hello clever Python coders! I have started a project to import Ldraw (Lego digital models) into Houdini. It is working well but for one problem: The facing of the Normals isn't working and is somewhat tricky due to having to keep track of a recursive function's state. My intention is for this to be released free and opened source to Orbolt for all to enjoy! In the meantime, I'm slammed at work until July and have no time to finish this. Anyone want to take a look? PM me or just email me and I'll send you the shtuff. Cheers, Peter B
  6. Hi Timur, I'm just starting to play with this, looks fantastic! Sadly, I am hitting some (hopefully) minor errors. Is there a forum for questions on setting up Afanasy? I am happy to contribute my findings as well, there are a couple of minor mistakes in the docs (PYTHONPATH pointing to /opt/cgru/afanasy/plugins/houdini which should actually be /opt/cgru/plugins/houdini, for example) but I am now stuck on an AVOIDING HOSTS issue that I can't figure out. Cheers, Peter B
  7. VHUG Wednesday March 5, 2014, 7pm sharp at Image Engine: Featuring Ian Farnsworth presenting Flip Tricks and Pyro, and high point count rendering. Plus a visit from the nice folks from SESI, who are interested in feedback and discussion on Houdini 13! Post any questions you would like answered on the message board here and we'll get Kieran and Rob to answer as many as possible! Don't forget if you have a 5 minute Tip or Trick, please let us know so we can ensure it's working before the event starts.
  8. Wednesday, November 27, 2013 7:00pm until 9:00pm Featuring Caleb Howard (EA) and Andrew Lowell (Lost Boys School). Caleb will present the Trace VOp for debugging networks using ForEach SOps via log files and associated geometry images. He may also include critters demonstrating autonomous behaviour. Andrew will present his reproduction of a tesla-coil system (lots of spline rendering and VOps tricks in there). New location! Come check out the Lost Boys School of VFX. Thanks Ria Andria Bénard for hosting! Hope to see you there! Sounds like lots of juicy Houdini tips and trips are in store. 495 Railway St #200, Vancouver, BC V6A 1A7
  9. The question came up: Do you need to RSVP? The answer is: No! Just drop in, the more the merrier

  11. We would like to record and share these but there are a few issues: -the space we hold these events in is part of an active VFX studio. Which means that it needs to be MPAA certified, which means by default "no recording of any kind". We might be able to get permission somehow but none of us have the time nor energy to pursue that -the presenters often work for other VFX studios, which means we'd have to track down their permission too. See above for time and energy issues -in any case, even with permission, if someone comes out of the woodwork to challenge us, we have no liability insurance meaning me and Leo and Greg could be personally on the hook for a lawsuit. We will not risk that. Of course when SESI hold their own events that they control, they can (and ideally should) record and share them. Even then, it's a pretty large effort, much larger than "point Iphone at stage" Cheers, Peter B
  12. VHUG Wednesday Sept 25, 2013 at Image Engine. 7pm sharp (please arrive 6:45 if possible, as someone has to attend the door) Image Engine theatre: 101 West 5th Avenue, plenty of street parking, bus #84 runs frequently nearby, easy walk from Olympic Village or Main St stations! Featuring: Rob Stauffer from SESI showing the Houdini Engine and Clear Menser, discussing the challenges and solutions to being a one-man-band (in Houdini) at a smaller studio. If you wish hard enough, SESI might bring swag No, we likely can't record it, sorry.
  13. Not yet but it will be Sept 25 at Image Engine. I'm out sick so announcements are lagging
  14. VHUG call for presenters ! VHUG'ers - we're in need of presenters for our next VHUG gatherings. Six presenters would give us another year's worth of VHUG gatherings. Would you like to support your VHUG community, show off your Houdini chops and share your kung fu with others? Volunteer as a presenter! It's fine if you don't have anything prepared right now - we try to book the full year all at once, so you'll have many months to come up with something. We're looking for Houdini tips, tricks and general cool Houdini applications and ideas that can be presented in about an hour. To volunteer, just pm me! Remember, no presentations = no VHUG gatherings. Like the lottery, we have to be in it to win it.
  15. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 7:00pm until 9:00pm Image Engine - #101 West 5th Ave Jeff Higgins, showing "RBD Tricks and Cool Stuff in Houdini" and Michael Kessler, showing "Polys to Plastic: Using Houdini to create real world objects." with demo of his home made 3D Printer! There's plenty of street parking. Please try to arrive between 6:30 and 7pm as the door needs to be attended and will be unattended at 7:00 sharp. If no-one is at the door, please wait and someone will check.
