  1. In a pipeline that requires you to do VFX work in Houdini and then render said VFX in 3ds max, there are many formats that are viable (I mostly use alembic). But I was not lucky finding a straightforward method/format to export particle systems that were created in Houdini to be later replaced by geometry in 3ds max for rendering. After some tests, we managed to do it using an HDA called PRTRop which exports particles in .prt file format. The particles were then imported into 3ds max using TyFlow, that reads a couple attributes such as width (pscale), id - this one is necessary for tyflow to import the particles, velocity, etc... Then we hit another roadblock: what if I want to export particles with orientation information for my geometry instancing? It turns out that, after some more testing, we discovered Tyflow uses an attribute called Orientation (case sensitive) which is a quaternion just like Houdinis orient attribute, and it has to be exported as a float16. So in case some of you were wondering how to do this, I'm sharing the workflow used here. If some of you know a better way feel free to share it... it might save some lives! Cheers, Mozzo
  2. Lets say you use c4d and you instance an object into different particles (with random rotations for example). If then you export that instanced geometry as an alembic and import it in 3ds max you get geometry with world transformation information (each geometry instanced has its own rotate/scale/translate info). Is it possible to do the same in Houdini?
  3. Houdini Engine in 3d max does not work. Non-training version, SideFX Houdini FX 17.5.39. When loading an hda file, the Houdini Engine in 3D max does not respond. Who knows how to fix it?
  4. I can't take credit for it, but it needed to be shared. This made me cry with laughter.
  5. Hi Everyone, I am doing sand like particles in Houdini and need to render it in 3ds max using v-ray. Can anybody give me some hints as to how I should go about bringing thousands of particles into 3ds max effectively? At the moment I am thinking of exporting to .abc (using alembic crate exporter) and then applying spheres to my points using frost. Would that be the way you do it? Or maybe I should output .bin from houdini. Could someone link me with a stable version of this rop? Should I use the realflow one? Is there any way to "cheat" and increase density in max? sort of like how you would use partitions with a slight offset when dealing with krakatoa. Just trying to think of the right way to get this many particles to go smooth on my machine. I saw this example online and its similar to what I am doing and rendered in 3ds max. Thanks a lot Fred
  6. Hey guys, I'm currently looking at FX TD career opportunities in New York. I'm open to working freelance, either on-site or remotely, and long term positions. My experience is nearly 2 years using Houdini. It was taught as the main software in my Master's program - Digital Effects at Bournemouth University, UK. After my graduation, I worked at Framestore NY on TV, commercials and VR. I had a 6 month contract with Framestore, which unfortunately they weren't able to renew due to scheduling and budgeting. References available upon request. In my time using Houdini, I have created a wide array of effects to a high level. These include: fluids, cloth, smoke, hair & fur, RBDs, soft bodies, particles, pyro/volumes. I also have a excellent knowledge of the vfx pipeline due to my professional experience and having worked on my own personal projects during my student days. I have extensive experience in Nuke and PFTrack, as well as 3DS Max, Maya, After Effects, Premiere and Photoshop. Please see my links below for my showreel and other details. I have eligibility to work in both US and UK as I have dual citizenship. Showreel | Linkedin | Vimeo | Portfolio | Resume Cheers, Mark
  7. Is the anyone who uses Houdini Engine with 3Ds Max? I tried to use it with Houdini 16.0.557 and 3Ds Max 16 SP3 and SP4, but there was an error message "HoudiniEngineFor3dsMax2016.dlo> failed to initialize." Error code 127 - The specified procedure could not be found ". I reinstalled Houdini few times, checked PATH environment variable - there was no results. After there I installed Houdini 15.0 and Houdini 15.5 - and error disappeared (and in Plug-in Manager appeared HoudiniEngineFor3dsMax2016), but when I tried to create HoudiniEngine Mesh Plugin 3ds Max just crashes. Could you help me please?

    Free Allan McKay training!

Hey everybody! So as a member of both Allan McKays' "FX TD Transformation" as well as "Live Action Series" I can personally say that he makes some of the best FX training out there! Though this is mostly 3Ds Max training, replicating the stuff he makes in Houdini can be a lot of fun. So he just announced that he'll make a new training series, that will be completely free. And he'll be making the most popular suggestion for the desired effect for the plate he has shot. By signin' up with the given link, I will be granted some points as well, which would be much appreciated! Link: http://gift.allanmckay.com/ref/W4336540 Hopefully this is not in violation with any rules, I just wanted to share some great free training. Also, for those of you who submits an idea, feel free to write it down below. Would be cool to hear what people would like to see happen with the shot! :-) Cheers!
  9. Hello My name is Nathan Kelley and I'm currently studying Computer Animation and VFX at Leeds Beckett University. I'm currently making my dissertation and I need people to be involved in the research which I've chosen a questionnaire. The Dissertation topic is called "Can Houdini be a good alternative to 3DS Max and Maya". If you have experience with Houdini whether a beginner or advanced user please answer my questionnaire at the link below. https://zephyrx24.typeform.com/to/DpzbrH All the help will be appreciated, Thank you very much for your time. From Nathan Kelley
  10. Hey all, Has anyone tried the Houdini Engine for 3ds Max plugin? I ran into an issue where everything seems to work fine until I press Ok on the Create Houdini Engine Mesh Plugin interface, .ms gets created but no asset appears in the scene. I used the binaries that came for Max 2016, and I'm at the moment using Houdini 15.5.542 as opposed to 15.0.244.16, I'll try that version but eventually I need to advance the version number. My max is a little rusty so I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice to get the default ship example to load? For reference - https://github.com/K240/HoudiniEngineFor3dsMax Thanks, -Ben Edit: 15.0.244.16 is no longer available to download.
  11. Does anybody have compiled PRT exporter for houdini 15.5.480 ?
  12. I am having my first shot where I have to export geometry from 3ds Max to Houdini. Is there a preferred exporting method to follow? For example, I have a wall made of bricks. In Max, they are all attached as one object made of multiple separate objects. When I tried exporting it this way(as a single obj), the most I was able to get from Houdini was to take each primitive and treat them individually. I also tried exporting as a single Alembic piece, but that acted as what would essentially be an unpacked object and came in as a single point. So in short, what method is everyone/standard practice used for exporting out multiple (hundreds, thousands) of geo pieces from another package into Houdini? I tried doing a search but couldn't really find a definitive answer. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks :)! ****i solved this by exporting as multiple elements in 1 go. So instead of having all objects connected into 1 object, they were separated out and exported by selection.
  13. I do import particles in the alembic to render using vrayproxy. Why particles have no motion blur? motion blur.zip
  14. Hello I exported a sequence of a broken object in Houdini using Alembic and imported in 3ds max as alembic. I tried to re-scale time in 3ds max so that the sequence stay slower (eg, the original sequence is 5 seconds, I want to increase to 15 seconds). But nothing changes. Is there a way to use the re-scale time in 3ds max in alembic objects without changing anything in Houdini? Thank you
  15. Hi everyone. I am just trying to export several vertex vec3 attributes and render them in 3ds Max. So far I can only render 1 attribute, Cd, but I fail with others. Can someone explain the workflow to me? How can I render my custom attributes? Thanks in advance
