mantra random crashes

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Under Houdini 6.0.286 NC, i experience mantra crashes when rendering a sequence of frames. Verbose output option ends with this annoying message: mantra: Mantra caught signal 11.

This crash seems not to be specific of the current image being rendered (relaunching the renderer at this frame is ok, but another crash may happen on following frames...).

This error happens when rendering obj with or without displacement shaders, so i guess this is not related to displace bound pbs. All obj being rendered are polygons. Rendering these objects with openGL ROPs never crashed, though.

I also increased bucket size from 16 to 64, but didn't give any result.

This symptom occurs on two really different systems (Dual Celeron 500, 392 MB RAM and Athlon Thunderbird 1.4 GHz, 1GB RAM), both under Win2K SP2. Task Manager didn't reveal any excessive memory use (130 MB for hmaster.exe, around 15 MB for mantra.exe), even little before crash times.

So here are the questions:

1) What does signal 11 mean?

2) In what circumstances may it happen, if not caused by memory leakage? 3) Could it be caused by a surface shader? If so, why is it not systematically crashing on a specific frame?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Yves

I've gotten that error when rendering a frame with deep rasters. It will finish several buckets and then just stop. When I check the console (I'm on irix) it says Mantra caught signal 11. This is was also 6.0.286 NC, haven't tried it with 6.1 yet.
