Using Pre-Flight to archive scenes and dependencies

I know that when you do the hqueue cloud-submit thing, it prompts you to pre-flight and get everything referenced relative to either a $HIP or $JOB path; and then Houdini seems to tar up the entire contents of the scene and its dependencies before sending over to Amazon... and then the local tar file is deleted.

Is there a way to generate that tar archive without having to go through HQueue? It would be great to use Pre-Flight to get everything placed and referenced correctly, and then from there, directly generate a non-ephemeral archive. I had a look at the $HFS/houdini/scripts/hqueue/hqlib.py file, and couldn't find much (although I may have missed something).

Any ideas?
