VDB Fails To Convert L-System Gnarly Tree?

Hi All,

I am playing around with the L-system gnarly tree preset and I want to convert my tree to VDB and then back to polygons for further processing.

When I add the convert node, however, it does not convert the entire tree, the lower trunk is left out.

What causes this?

How can I get Houdini to convert all of my geometry?

it's because you have open surfaces, try to create a vdb from a tube with no caps, it doesn't work. you need really low res for vdb to fill holes.

you need to work a bit on the tree geometry to clean it and close it. booleans might help.

Thanks, I keep forgetting about close surfaces, I'll try that.

I agree, that preset is pretty yucky. That is why I was trying to POLYGON->VDB->POLYGON round trip it to clean it up a bit. Basically trying to make something to sculpt on.

PolyFill is one of the new options in H16 to cap holes. It's worth a try.
