Rendering Over A Network - Multiple Hosts

hey all

I trying to render some clouds using the same old instanced sphere with random rollling textures as their alpha.

it renders really well however the ram usage is seriously high, so i render accross different machines using -H host1,host2 etc

however this causes problems where if any machine crashes

is there any settings that can

-- limit the ram used by mantra

-- rerender the buckets that crash?

then... does anyone have any tips for rendering scenes with alot of semitransparent objects?
