hey,

i'm quite new to houdini coming from a 3dsmax background.

which is the best way to create a river type noise similar to this:

Have a look at the waves VOP. Simply create in VEX Builder a displacement material, use the Waves Vop as input for P and you have a nice starting point. If you are intrested to see how this VOP does all the magic.. simply inspect it (press u) and have a look at the network. If you want to start from scratch start with a few sin, add, multiply and noise VOP's. But I guess this is just one of many possible ways :)
