  1. Hi: Now that I have joyousy dicovered the art of photon maping in houdini (I'm refering to caustics), I have been yearnin to create a killer cornell box. I was looking at some amazing cornel boxes in the Discreet logic* Mental ray book. And one thing that I'm shamefully ignorant of is how to create volumetric lighting. Years ago this was a cinch when I was using truespace 3-D. My question is simple. 1. how is this effect achieved? Is it the spotlight, an atmosphere, a compositing trick? 2. Is it terribly computationaly expensive? 3. Should the spotlights be VEX or is it a fog thing if so what type of fog? 4. Is there any Ray Marching involved? 5. Is z depth something I should look into more if I plan to composite the object in shake or halo. I would like to create a lens with a beam shining through it and see the light focus in the midst is a foggy atmosphere with caustics, raytracing, soft shadows, radiosity and atmosphere. Pretty sexy exersize huh? thnkx guys, luis www.ectonaut.com
  2. Hey Wizards: Take pity on me guys. I learned this whole renderman/maya/houdini thing on my own. I use slim to make shaders and apply them by name onto houdini on the object level mostly. I would like to add them to my shop operator RIB menu and control the parameters. I created the dialouge scripts blablabla with the .ds files...yay Then there is this whole directory structure where you have to make a shop folder and then sub-directories corresponding to the type,ie shader, displacement, what have you. then there is that whole matter of having a blank file with no extension. Inside is the label with the names and the icon type etc. (I'm foggy on where this file should be placed, In the SHOP folder?) do I need to set an environment variable? I have done this before with vex shaders with version 4.1 years ago as part of this underwater caustic tutorial that I have been unable to locate these days. I'm clear on that. anyhoo...I have the shaders (slc, slo and the .ds) I look inside the houdini shop folder where there used to be the file where all the Shop entries were listed and It's all different in version 6.1.208 all I see is this palette folder. where do I put the .ds scripts? where do I put the directory tree ie shop with the surface, displacement etc. do I have to set a variable or something. I read the renderman houdini tutorial here on odforce but I must be dumb because I still don't "get" parts of it. the manual is even more confusing. HELP !!!!!!! I need to controll the parameters of my renderman shaders. 3. Hey: I'm ecstatic that I'm using renderman renderer with houdini. However that IP window is not cool. not cool at all. I read the manual and it says in rather plain english to run protoinstall and choose that prman item from the menu. Only problem is IT'S NOT THERE...what the heck? sigh... Is there a way to use Pixat "IT" to display rendered test frames and sequences as well? "It" is pretty cool. This is my info. If I'm doing anything wrong please tell me. I'm so close to my houdini/Rman goals and dumb little things like this are getting in the way. 4. Hi: I just recently hooked up renderman 10 to houdini by entering some environment variables in my win 2000 system environment. When i preview something using renderman it renders fast and ugly with lots of banding!!!...this only happens the first time anytime afterwards it either takes an eternity or just displays that display window and hogs up my system recources. I tried briefly to use the ROP's and changing the output to renderman and network renderman and I keep getting errors. I change the render command and write out the path explicitly in the render line...(where stuff goes if you don't have your variables set up). and still no also i installed exluna entropy 3.1 and it works. so I put it in the environment variable called "path" and chose entropy 3.0 from a ROPS operator sub-menu and it won't render...I get a red error display flag. I have mental ray also (that I use with maya) I want to see how that works out in houdini dammit I really like houdini and renderman and want to get started loading my renderman shaders into houdini. Can someone give me some tips on using houdini with 3rd party renderers namely renderman 10. also I hate that display window that pops up when using renderman preview I want to use "it" and all the cool features. and yes I'm looking into vex and vops it's very renderman-like in a way. Thanks in advance
  5. Hi: I'm looking into using houdini for an animation package. I've been following it since 4.0 release and I think i'm ready and confident to use it as an effects and animation package. I recently installed linux redhat 8 and on a dell Dimesion with an onboard 8 meg vram 2x AGP 566 hz intel celeron 128 sdram. It's a bit old it's my test computer...thought I would give it a "linux boost". I installed maya 4.5, shake 2.5, rayz 2.2 houdini 6.0. and wow... Linux Shake works really good compared to the windows 2000 version of shake on a p4 2 gig with a geforce MX 2 64 meg agp 4x card and 512 ddr ram!!! maya ran smooth depite only having half the recommended ram. When it came to houdini 6 the performance between these computers was it's most evident. I made a dynamics simulation with a sphere and the spring SOP and the preformance on the dell celeron 566 2X AGP 8Meg 128 SDRAM Linux Houdini was BETTER than a Pentium 4 2 gig with a geforce 2 MX AGP 4X 64 MB VRAM and 512 DDR memory !!!! Raided drives too !!! (level 0)... ALRIGHT !!!! So...Let's get these programs on the p4 with the cool graphics card and the DDR memory and a wider cache and all that... So I installed redhat 8 just fine it recognizes the card and everything is nice. i install houdini 6 and licence it and it starts...great. As soon as I click on any menu or anything functional it crashes. So...ok I installed the nvidia drivers...yay. This time the intro screen show up on the upper part of the screen now...smaller, antialiased...and then the program crashes before the interface appears.... ok it's a resolution problem right....other resolutions don't even show the startup screen. when I try to run houdini it just doesn't even bother and tells me it crashes....this is the error message... Crash report from root; FUSE Version 6.0.249 When I start maya 4.5 it works but all the viewports are blank...I'm blind in maya now. on my p4 with the geforce 2 mx card I'm using redhat 8 and Gnome I tried 7.3 on test computer with KDE but I hate KDE now I got to used to Gnome....I'm getting demotivated here.. so.. what's the deal...Redhat 8, Gnome, KDE?, geforce 2 MX 64 AGP what gives? and why is it whenI type source houdini_setup It's returns an error message and when I type houdini_source_bash works in the command shel I can't install houdini 5.5 because of this...and it doesn't work with 7.3 please help...Houdini linux is packing some performance for the buck and the Ghz These programs and os's are supposed to work according to the manufacturers BTW. PLease send me some of you guys configurations I want to try athlon dual processor next. suggestions? HELP!!!!! sincerely, Luis
  6. maya2houdini geometry not importing

It works !!! Thank you very much. now, If I could only figure out why side fx got rid of the MAT operator in 5.5 sigh. Do I have to learn vex vops now or what ? cheers Luis ps houdini halo is really friggen slow
  7. Hello: I loaded the iges export plug-in in maya 4 and 4.5 and exported a model. Houdini totally refuses to accept anything. This includes .Iges (for nurbs) and .OBJ (poly). I get that red thingy on the File SOP I'm running maya 4.5 and 4 and houdini 5 and 5.5 Master. I have done this before with maya 3 and houdini 4.1. I tried to bring some rhinoceros 3-D models into houdini that doesn't work either. What's going on? help !!! thanx in advance
