  1. Rendering Z-maps

    Hi all, It's been quite a while since I have been here. I have spent the last year learning different sorts of skills, but now I am back to work with Houdini. Can anyone suggest a method for rendering out z maps for compositing? I used to know of a work around for Houdini to generate these, but it's been nearly two years since I have done so. Could someone refresh my memory please. Thanks. Grav
  2. Greetings Everyone, I am currently teaching myself to use Renderman with Houdini. I haven't had any problems using most of the default renderman shaders and have worked out how to import in my custom Renderman shaders as .otl files. However, I have run into two snags. Firstly, I found no function for converting tiffs (or any other file format) into .tx textures like there is in SLIM. Is there a function for that somewhere in Houdini, or will I need to write a script to take care of that separately? Second problem: I have been working with the basic renderman shaders and have gotten them to render with the renderman preview without any problems. The problem that I have run into is with trying to create Renderman lights. I first tried creting Renderman light shops and then using them in the SHOP light section. This yeilded lights that realy did not light. With my point lights I was able to create an effective light by setting the up a rib shader under the rib tab as an atenlight. Point light rib shader was just as ugly as the renderman point light sop. I can live with the set up on the point lights though. My problem is with my key light, which is a spot light. I was able to sort of get it going, however, I have not been able to get it to cast shadows. The only shadow shaders that i can find are the default VEX shadows. They doint seem to work with any of the renderman spotlight shaders (including shadowspot) wether loaded from SHOP or from the rib tab. However, when I switch back to no light or rib shaders, the VEX Ratshadow does what it's supposed too. Any suggestions on how to get the Renderman shadered light to cast shadows would be appreciated.   3. MacOS Houdini? Vote now!

    Personally, I don't care on this one. I personally detest working on Macs and only do so when I need too. They don't really like me either. Even the G5's at school lock up on me fairly often, though I have been told by some that it has to do with how they were set up. However, there are definite issues crossing platform sometimes. I sent a flash file that I was working on with a fellow student yesterday and she could not get it to open up in flash on her Mac laptop. And yes we were both working with the same version of flash. Also, we compaired maya renders of the same file on a G5, Windows 2k, and Linux. The G5 came in dead last. Windows was on top when rendered directly from maya, however, linux out preformed when both were run from scripts. You do the math. However as with all things, it is up to the user what platform they prefer. *sigh* I am so ready for school to start up next week. I am sick of using apprentice and those pesky watermarks. Ready to get back to the real thing. Well, that's my two bits. Grav

  6. Games... I dunno...

    I enjoyed Knights of the Old Republic as well. I am looking forward to EQ II. The movies look nice, especially for a MMORPG. I was an EQ junky for a couple of years, but killed my account when I went back to school. LOL They are releasing it at the beginning of finals week. The box is going to sit in it's cellaphane wrapper for a week, taunting me while I try to get my final projects finished. How is that for cruel! Seriously though, I have to agree that the look of games has not improved nearly as much as I would have expected. However, I think that may change in the next two years. I do hope that the entertainment quality improves in the future. It seems that the fun factor has gone down in the industry in the last few years. I found myself becoming quickly bored with 2/3 of the games which I have purchased in the last 3 years and most of the ones that I have enjoyed weren't using "eye popping" graphics anyway. Grav
  7. 64 bit Processors

    Has anyone used a 64 bit system with Houdini or any other 3d packages? If so have you noticed any significant improvement in preformance? Also, are you still using a 32 bit OS? I am planning on building a new system in a few monthes and this info would be helpful. Thanks. GRav
