  2. Hello Houdini Newbies, Some time ago I have launched my new Houdini FX publication. It's a good starting point for beginners and artists coming from other 3d applications like Cinema 4D, Maya & Co. It's well structured and easy to follow. If you have any questions about it, please let me know. Thanks, Helge Trailer: https://lnkd.in/dZaSBNw Here is the direct link to the publication: https://lnkd.in/deNWqJQ Here the full description: This publication "pixeltrain - Houdini FX Fundamentals >> Fast Forward“ by experienced trainer Helge Maus is a complete Introduction to Houdini FX. In 117 lessons with a duration of 18,5 hours, your instructor Helge Maus provides you with a step by step approach to understanding Houdini FX and its workflow as a fully featured 3d application. This training is designed to get you up and running quickly, enabling you with the skills needed to work effectively in this incredibly powerful 3d and vfx package. Additionally, it lays the foundation of essential concepts and paradigms to understand more advanced topics for other modules of Houdini FX down the road. In this course, Helge Maus starts from the ground up providing you with a solid and practice-oriented foundation in Houdini FX. First, he takes you through the user interface, followed by an exploration of the different levels and contexts of a Houdini project. You will conclude by learning how to manage these concepts through the production cycle within Houdini FX. You will write your first expressions in Hscript. Therein, you will learn the concepts of dependencies between objects, explore using groups and packed geometries and finish by building your first asset. Once you have those primary skills under your belt, Helge gives you a brief introduction into working with VOPs (vex visual scripting), Digital Assets, Volumes and VDBs. After that, you will start learning the basics of modeling inside of Houdini FX. You will begin with the basics of NURBS Curves and generating surfaces, followed by the powerful and flexible polygon modeling tools. Important topics like Deformations and UVs are explained in-depth and demonstrated. After you have learned to build your assets, you will assemble your scene, set cameras with physical attributes, and finish with lighting and shading. Helge wraps up with a practice-oriented introduction of rendering techniques using the Houdini Mantra renderer. After finishing this training you will have the skills needed to understand the more advanced workflows and modules of Houdini FX. Topics included: 01 Welcome to Houdini FX [01h 52m] 02 Basic Concepts in Houdini FX [02h 57m] 03 VOPs & Digital Assets [01h 44m] 04 Volumes & VDBs in Houdini FX [01h 04m] 05 Working with Curves [00h 57m] 06 Generating Surfaces [01h 16m] 07 Polygon Modeling [01h 45m] 08 Retopo, PolyBuild & Boolean [01h 04m] 09 Deformations [00h 44m] 10 UVs in Houdini FX [01h 22m] 11 Lighting & Cameras [01h 21m] 12 Shading [01h 54m] 13 Rendering [00h 43m] You can find the entire table of contents here >> pixeltrain.de/images/stories/Houdini_FX_Fundamentals_Content.pdf These tutorials were created using mostly Houdini 17.5. However, we made sure that everything will work in Houdini 18+. Also, you will receive subsequent information about any version-based technical changes as needed.

  4. Hello! I'm starting a twitch dot television channel and will be streaming Houdini training content. I've worked at several large VFX and advertising studios as well as taught Houdini classes at Academy of Art university. I'm hoping I can reach a larger audience through Twitch as well as the idea that people viewing the stream can participate by asking questions and providing feedback in real time. This is my channel: https://www.twitch.tv/johnkunz My first stream will be starting on Sunday (Jan 26th) @ 1pm PST. If you follow my channel (it's free ), you'll get an email notification whenever I start a stream. I'll be going over this project I recently finished https://www.behance.net/gallery/90705071/Geometric-Landscapes showing how I built things (VOPs, packed prims, Redshift render) and why I set things up the way I did. Some of the images I made are shown below. Please come by this Sunday with any questions or ideas you might have!
  5. NASA science visualization department wants to transition from another popular 3D application to Houdini. Houdini trainer needs to be experienced in ingesting large amounts of science data and presenting it in a way the general public can comprehend. You need to be able to teach artists, that use this other application, how to transition to Houdini in this context. You will be flown to Baltimore, travel expenses paid, to provide on-site training for a week. Thanks
  6. Hello everyone, My name is André and I’m researching how to design a 3D (environment) Production Pipeline for Virtual Reality training. The goal is to have a pipeline that would allow us to build training environments as efficiently as possible. Due to the nature of the training, our environments are relatively small max 200m x 200m. Our team is small 3-6 people but can change depending on the project. I'm especially interested in Houdini3D integration in the Pipeline for generating procedural assets. Online I've done quite some research but don't find much information about this topic in detail. Lots of examples of output but not the actual production process. I need some help with designing our pipeline. Love the GDC talk by Insomniac about procedural generation in Marvel's Spider-Man (see video below). Gives some great insights but would love to learn how to do this on a small (indie) scale. Could you share your Production Pipeline in a diagram? What do you produce with Houdini and what do you produce with other tools? Would love to learn about how you developed your pipeline and why you made certain choices.
  7. Does anyone knows a decent training source for learning fly crowd simulations in Houdini?

HOW IT WORKS This course will be delivered via video only. We will work on weekly projects, so will have to meet the assigned challenges. Keep in mind that these assignments will make up interesting material for your «Demo Reel». Likewise, we will give you access to the Facebook support group, where you can interact with your instructor and classmates. The course is divided into 4 modules: MODULE I The Awakening (8 weeks) We will start by explaining how to take your first steps in the software. The content is highly optimized to get you familiar with Houdini in a dynamic and productive way. We won’t talk about every menu or button; all this information will be explained on-the-go, along with the training. Our priority is to make you feel comfortable from the start. You will find out about the main nodes in Houdini, you will learn to move around the interface and we will teach you how to control points and particles (points, pops and grains). At the end of this module, you will be able to create simulations of rain, sand, snow, perspiration, sparks, ashes, confetti, fireworks, bubbles, and much more. This is not a lighting and rendering course, but we will teach you everything you need to submit your project with a perfect final look. MODULE II Fire Inception (8 weeks) Explosions, fire, smoke, clouds … everything you have been waiting for! This module is full of action. We will focus on learning to emit and control volumes, using of one of the most powerful solvers in Houdini, i.e., “Pyrosolver”. You will learn different methods to accelerate your simulations, always working as quickly and efficiently as possible. We will teach you how to create shaders that will make your simulation look realistic. Recycle! Every setup created during these 8 weeks, can be reused to create new scenes. MODULE III Rise of the Fallen (8 weeks) You will become a weapon of mass destruction! You will learn to perform different types of fractures and we will provide you with all the tools to control and choreograph your simulations. In this third module, you will put together everything you have learned so far to create complex scenes using particles and volume. Breaking objects, demolishing buildings or splitting a land into two lots, are just some of the challenges you will face here! MODULE IV Deep Dive (8 weeks) We will have to put out the fire after the chaos… This is the final module of the course, and here you will learn to work with FLIP, which is the Houdini’s solver to create liquids. You will recreate infinite oceans and simulate water. You will learn how to create foam, bubble and spray passes. Finally, we will teach you how to deal with the different viscosities to get simulations of blood, chocolate, honey, yogurt, caramel, etc. APPLY TO THE RENASCENCE PROGRAM NOW AND GET 25% OFF!* 399$ 299$ http://houdini.training/

    Free Allan McKay training!

Hey everybody! So as a member of both Allan McKays' "FX TD Transformation" as well as "Live Action Series" I can personally say that he makes some of the best FX training out there! Though this is mostly 3Ds Max training, replicating the stuff he makes in Houdini can be a lot of fun. So he just announced that he'll make a new training series, that will be completely free. And he'll be making the most popular suggestion for the desired effect for the plate he has shot. By signin' up with the given link, I will be granted some points as well, which would be much appreciated! Link: http://gift.allanmckay.com/ref/W4336540 Hopefully this is not in violation with any rules, I just wanted to share some great free training. Also, for those of you who submits an idea, feel free to write it down below. Would be cool to hear what people would like to see happen with the shot! :-) Cheers!
  14. We have just released a new volume to our Houdini Jumpstart Series from Adam Swaab Intro To VOPS Houdini VOPS is a powerful multi-threaded environment for building tools and components of tools in Houdini. This tutorial goes through the ins and outs of VOPS, going through many short examples to get you ready to harness the full power of VOPS. We also do a quick intro to pure coding in vex, as vex is the underlying language of VOPS. In the final chapter, we show how to create our version of a polygon effector, similar to one you may see in Cinema 4D. If you are not familiar with this fantastic series then you can see all the titles HERE. Thank you Tim
  15. Just wondering if anyone knows if there is anywhere at all in NZ to find houdini training? Everywhere seems to just focus on Max and Maya. So excluding online classes, is there anywhere in New Zealand?
  16. Hello Everyone, This training covers the process of building a highly detailed sci-fi power module and it's surrounding environment entirely from scratch in Houdini. To model this scene we shall use a combination of poly modeling, NURBS, VDB and a little bit of VOPS. This training will also help highlight the advantages of having a procedural system while building complex models and environments. The final chapter will take a look at how to render the scene in Octane Standalone by exporting the scene using Alembic. For further details kindly click on the link given below http://www.rohandalvi.net/advmodeling/ The final renders of the scene can be viewed in my still gallery. http://www.rohandalvi.net/stills/ regards Rohan Dalvi
  17. Brand New Houdini to Arnold OpenVDB Workflow by cmiVFX High Definition Training Videos for the Visual Effects Industry Princeton, NJ (December 9th, 2015) Fresh of the edit pipeline, just in time for the holiday season is another hit single training video by cmiVFX. As the Visual Effects industry has matured over the last few years, new formats to accommodate the rendering of large dynamic simulations such as dust, smoke, fire, or even explosions, have been developed to increase the potential for productivity in workflow. Our resident Houdini research scientist, Varomix, committed to bringing a hands on guide for this newly created software pipeline between a host app and a final render. OpenVDB is a standard in the film industry, proven, tested and built by the very same guys that are in the very same film industry. This technique has the potential to be applied to multiple workflows, and over time will be adopted by more artists, exponentially. When it comes to the latest research information in the computer graphics and visual effects industry, only one worldwide network of artists help maintain the lead in the VFX training revolution. That network is cmiVFX.com! Short Description Learn how to use OpenVDB, an open source file transfer format, to bring your dynamic simulations to final render. Vimeo Teaser Trailer https://vimeo.com/148132405 |||||| Houdini to Arnold VDB Workflow ||||| https://cmivfx.com/store/659-Houdini+Arnold+VDB+Workflow Chapter Descriptions Introduction This course was designed around customers requesting the most amount of information in shorter time periods. Our efforts allowed us to reach the best balance for the VFX artist on the go! Simple Workflow Example First, we will break down the process we need to export VDBs from Houdini to Arnold so they can be rendered. In the beginning, all processes will be manual, however as we get further into the process, we learn how to automated the process for rapid reuse. Arnold Volume Node We will dice all the parts of the Arnold Volume Node to become completely aware of all its possibilities. Automating The Workflow Now that we know the steps we need to export our volumes to VDB and into Arnold, we’ll automate the exporting part so we have faster iterations while tweaking the effect in Houdini. Explosion Workflow One of the more popular end user questions: “How to I render my dynamic CG explosion using Arnold?” Our answer back will be the remainder of this chapter. Clouds Workflow In this chapter, we take a full shot approach by making realistic clouds over a standard environment plate. All compositing and tuning will be shown in detail. Bonus Chapter: Rendering Volumes As a bonus chapter, we’ll talk about how to get rid of noise in your volume renders. Conclusion Houdini + Arnold is an example of unparalleled proceduralism amongst applications. This pipeline would work even if you have your own VDB capable render engine. Many compositing apps are looking at adding this technology to their toolset. About The Instructor Varomix is a VFX Artist, Generalist TD, Game Developer, Musician and Founder of MIXStudio. Shortly after Side Effects launched the Houdini Apprentice Program in 2002, Varomix became an ardent Houdini user. Since then it has become his main tool for creation. Varomix is also a father and husband that enjoy doing lots of crazy stuff with his family. Project Contents All cmiVFX videos come with all the training materials you can need right from our website.
