Joaquim's Master Project

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

In here I intend to post quite regularly my progress on my final project at BU... the Masters Project.

I just handed in my proposal today and what can you expect to see here? A floating (in mid-air) submarine, still wet and dripping, roaming around town and crushing against some buildings...

This will be a ride in learning new stuff and I can't wait to start! At the moment I'm finalizing a rough animatic and choosing the kind of sub to model (3 candidates at the moment...)

See ya soon!

*cough* x-men *cough* ;)

Good luck with it! -- Seriously though have a look at the latest x-men if you want some reference.

eheeh.... I realized a bit later that they have that scene with Magneto... haven't seen the movie yet, but seen the scene in Youtube. Anyway, I'll make it float in the city like if it was sailing undersea (with the steering moving and all)... and will only do the sim of it coming from the water if I have enough time for it!

Thanks for your comment and suggestion!

Ahahahah!

Hi GallenWolf!

I must say that the Seawolf type sub was one of the 3 initial candidates (being the others the type 039 and the type 033) however... they were simply HUGE!The Seawolf is 107 meters long with a beam of 12 meters...

When I did a mock-up geometry of a typical 3 floors building (+/-) 9 meters high... well, the scene would have a strange scale... and the sub would not scrape a building, it would destroy it completely!

So I decided to go with this one!

rdg I was talking about the same yesterday... for the obvious pun (and music to go)! Don't know if I will do it...

After some weeks delay, here I am posting again...

The time that pasted didn't found me idle.. I modelled my submarine model, took the backplates needed, started eye matching (the stills) and camera tracking the other ones and looked a bit into simulations...

For now, here's a turntable (short one) from my model! And some stills from the modelling stages... hope to put some more stuff this week (but also have to prepare for a presentation so... let's see!)

Thanks for all the help that this forum members have gave me so far!

Have a nice week all!

Ignore this post... I was having a browser problem and couldn't see my images...

You will notice some pinching on some of the closer shots... however I kind of disregarded them since I'll not go so close! And hey... human made "stuff" always have some imperfections, right? I can justify this with the search for ultra-realism... instead of some subdivision/crease issues...

See ya!

The pinching may affect your texture appearance.

Yeap... you may be right... I'll have to test it. And I think it may depend on the approach I'll take... we have some Mari licenses so I can try it also... or just procedurally shade it and see how it looks...

That's obviously an FX heavy project so I wouldn't spend much time on modeling and texturing as you can always refine that later. :)

Yeap... you're absolutely right! I really need to move on to other more important (MA wise...) areas, like the simulations... anyway, with some clever camera angles I think I can hide lot's of the "not so pretty" stuff... B)

Thanks for commenting!

Hi guys!

I know I haven't updated much but believe me I haven't been idle... but some stuff are just tests or whatever and don't produce nothing to show (or to be proud of, most of the times!)

Anyway, here's a video that can better define my idea for shot 01. The coming out of the water is now shot 00 (meaning that is dependent of my time to complete shot 01 and shot 02...). For now this is not much besides an AO and some shadows, comped (really... well, just placed on the backplate! No grading yet or whatever...).

At the moment I'm doing some Fluid sims and completed (I hope this one works) the "rig" to animate the underwater mines... that still need to be rotated randomly and have some with different chain sizes!

See ya!

Hi guys!

Here's another video, with some minor tweaks (I've been working on the second shot also... will post as soon as I have something "nice" to show ;) ).

I will appreciate all the critics and comments...

The "caustics" are just to see how they would look like... I think they can work IF they're slower, fainter and I make an overall golden look of the scene (like a sunset image or something like that...)

The "water" needs extra passes and a bit of tweaking in its final behaviour, when it hits the ground...

By the way... nothing is composed yet... just slapped on top! :)

Thanks man!

I'm improving it at the moment... next week should post more and probably the second shot also...

Hi again!

Here's a sneak peak of the beginning stages of image integration with the live-action plate (that in this 1st shot is only a still...).

It still has the caustics and the mines... those are not going to be present in the final image. 99.9% of the feedback I got pointed those as disturbing and so on... if you notice some miniaturization of the submarine... you're probably right! I was due to some blur I added on the background (also removed already...).

If you spot something else that you think should be upgraded or removed please do tell!

I hope you guys can see it in a 16/9 aspect ratio because sometimes (I don't know why) it doesn't show like that, despite being saved out with that format...

See ya

I think you're confused between Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) and Display Aspect Ratio (DAR). See: http://en.wikipedia....n_video_formats

Your image has a SAR of 5:4 (or 1.25, aka 720/576). So when it's displayed on my computer LCD monitor using Firefox with a PAR of 1.0, it looks like a 5:4 image.

Hi Edward!

i don't know if I am 100% clarified on that but yeah, I think I was making a confusion...
