Is it possible to blend 2 materials at the material level?

Also recently came across this image while searching for volume renders:

As you can see Blender allows mixing BSDFs. Not saying it's physically accurate but this is what I found:

 

"If you mix two shaders with the Mix Shader Node you get more physically correct values because it calculates a weighted (by the Fac param) average."

value_out = value_1 * Fac + value_2 * (1 - Fac)
 
"What about with translucent BSDFs?"
 
"For translucent BSDFs you still want to mix. A photon that hits a surface can either reflect or transmit, not both"
 
 
 
Any insight on this by our resident experts? :)
