Tree roots on ground

Hey guys, I would like some advice on modeling some tree roots on a ground with topology.

 

Attached are my reference and attempts to recreate the geometry in Houdini.

I'm not quite satisfied with the way the roots go as it's not quite controllable. Also the Creep SOP kind of displaces the end result from the original points, but I don't know how to make the roots follow the topology of the terrain otherwise.

You should try to creep or maybe even better, ray SOP, the l-system curves onto the terrain before adding the polywire.

After they have been projected you can use the point intersection normal you get from the ray SOP to offset your curves from the surface and then apply the polywire.

If you can do this in a loop 1 curve at a time you might also be able to get some nice overlapping roots instead of them intersecting.

Hi guys, just wanted to let you know where I've gone with the help you've kindly provided.

 

Simple tree generation with L-system, with roots that follow ground terrain.

Hi, With what rule in the L system did you do that? Can you pass me your rules here please.
