I spoke to Mark Elendt during the Users Group meeting & he said DSM can be used with i3d rendering so one can render without turning on "Self-shadowing" in the shader.

Yes but then we have a extra step, generate i3d, generate dsm, render scene.

But if you can speed up the self-shadowing pass maybe you gain time.

At the moment i'm using the integrated3D call to sample the self-shadowing, i think that to get the dsm you have to use the same.

Thank you Jason for the explanation. Is this a version 8 feature or has it been always available  since this method's been develop.

Nope, it's new to Mantra 8.0 - so you have an excuse ;)

It's been in PrMan for a couple of years now, though - just Houdini support for both the PrMan export and for Mantra has been improved.

Hey Szymon!

Here "PCloud only" example.

And again....it is not finished solution, it is just a template...

There is no selfshadowing (work in progress)

There is no advanced shading model (later)

For correct work, a point should contain attribute "density"

In this scene i have stolen this attribute from metafield.

See "/obj/model/capture_meta_density" VOP operator for details
