which card

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I am looking into getting a new graphics card sometimes in the next 6 months. However, I am torn between a Quadro XGL 750/900 and a Wildcat VP 960.

Wildcat VP seem to have the hardware for the future since it's newer. ANd considering that I've been using 3Dlabs long before I entered 3D. However, what's totally suck about 3dlabs at the moment is their lack of support for Linux, which I will be installing in the next day or 2.

Nvidia, on the other hand, has support for Linux. However, from what I've heard thus far, their driver seems to be less stable or something. Plus, with their effort focusing on Maxian, what about us Houdinites?

So... suggestions...?

Wildcats generally rule the roost as far as performance goes. I'm not too sure about the new VP range. The numbers have become meaningless to me unfortunately <_< .

And, as you point out... 3DLabs shun Linux like I shun month old milk.

nVidia is good and definitely getting better all the time. Their drivers seem to be on the up and up (ie it only takes one revision for them to work properly as opposed to 4  )

Anyway, I'm pretty sure you'd be happy with both those purchases.. depending on your needs.

Hmm... I really would like to have a dual boot between Windows and Linux. My transition to Linux will be a bit slower. However, I really wanted to test Houdini under Linux since my Houdini license server is on seperate Windows machine.

After all, while windows/mac users duke out their OS, I just want to make a quiet transition to Linux.

As a matter of fact, I think I'll be installing RH Linux 7.3 tonight. :)
