Please critique my beast rig

Recommended Posts

After chewing on all the variables for couple days (after not building a computer for 20 years) I think I might have it.

With my pro-level budget I think this should be good for a few years of freelance work.

Opinions? Did I miss anything? Something too small? Too big? Something fundamental missing? (other than a keyboard and mouse)

I like it, and although mine is a bit older, i have almost the same setup (bi-Xeon 2650, 64 Gb of ram, a quadro k6000 second hand bought a third of the price...). Although cpu clock is not the best, the number of cores is just fantastic when rendering comes, so i like that. If it would be just for sim work, i would probably take a single cpu, but quicker and OC.

I would nevertheless take a SSD of 2 Tb, that’s really more comfortable, and 6 Tb HDD : working on several projects at the same time, with lots of sims files have a huge footprint...

Thanks! I've taken that into account and some other advice and I think I'll be going with this:

CPU: AMD - Threadripper 2950X 3.5GHz 16-Core Processor (due to RAM bandwidth seems nearly as fast as 32 core at 1/2 the price)
Motherboard: MSI - X399 GAMING PRO CARBON AC ATX TR4 (should be good for a while)
Memory: G.Skill - Sniper X 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 (eventual upgrade to 128)
Storage: 2.0TB 2.5" SSD, internal 8TB 3.5" 7200RPM (should be good for a while)
2X Quadro P4000 8GB Video Card (should be good for a while)
Monitor: LG - 24GM79G-B 24.0" 1920x1080 144Hz Monitor (eventually upgrade)

Just wanted to point out, those Threadrippers use a TON of power, even when idle.  Something to consider.

I am wondering why didn´t you get a SSD m.2 NVME drive instead of sata?

Something important to note about my previous choice of motherboard, the MSI - X399 GAMING PRO CARBON AC ATX TR4 is getting a lot of reported problems as well as the one I got had problems and had to be swapped out for a ASRock - X399 Taichi ATX TR4 Motherboard, which is now on the list.
