Thoughts on this laptop build?

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I am just getting into Houdini and looking to do some more exploring of it whilst on the move. I realise that I am not gonna be able to push it with heavy sims, but I am keen to work on basic setups whilst keeping the weight low and keeping things portable. I am looking to mainly render using redshift hence the 2070 card and i've crammed all the ram in that I can. The company i'm using for the build don't offer amd options for cards, and this I7 is the only one which fits in this chassis. Any massive issues with the following setup? Are there any limitations I should expect?

Any Feedback much appreciated.

Just like you said it's not going to do any seriously massive sims. But it's going to be enough to learn techniques. Though you could probably do that too at 1/2 the price. Only 1 SSD, one monitor, and a cheaper GPU.

Still, since you're not doing crazy sims can probably get away with a less expensive graphics card. Check out https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/ and look at the "value %".

If you're spending 2K you could get a kick ass desktop tank for simming with a 10TB hard drive and 64GB of RAM. Again, take off the extra monitor and go with Linux (maybe Ubuntu) to save money.

Do you already have another laptop? That could do double duty as a web-browser & media player.

Thanks for the input. Portability is the number one factor in this purchase - I'm working between two offices and my home so I need something I can take around with me and use to work on different set-ups. The graphics card is mainly for using redshift - the less time I spend watching things render, the better. I have access to a pretty good desktop (threadripper, 64GB Ram) if I need to work on more intensive stuff, but the main thing is something which runs Houdini moderately well and allows me to work on the move.
