Flatten an object with autoseam and uvflatten

How can I use the islands generated by that network to simulate a peel and flatten effect ? Each island is reasonably flat thanks to uvautoseam. Now I'm looking for a way to transition between the flattened state of each island ( the away it looks in the uv views) and its actual  geometry in 3d space. I know there is some distortion to deal with. I'm not too sure where to start. Maybe I should start with having clean uv islands in 3d space ?
