RBD objects flake from moving object

I have a plane moving though the air (banking, pitching etc.) and I I need pieces to start crumbling off of it as it maneuvers and fly off. The problem is that I want the pieces to join the RBD sim only when I need them to, but to otherwise stay on the plane. Can I just add the pieces to the RBD solve at a specific time? Thank you.

Yes, there are two attributes active and deformed for this, when piece should sim active=1 deformed=0 otherwise active=0 deformed=1
