He just references it all.. Some Houdini, a lot of Cinema 4D and After Effects.

 

 

Another Tip I found is to - when feeling comfortable in you chosen software - use tutorials for other software to learn what you are after.

 

This will prevent you from blindly learning to push buttons but to completely understand your software and how it works.

This may not work all the time. You will just not recreate Pyro Stuff built in Houdini - There is just no way. Or at least not without Plug Ins.
