Mistyk
Hi, What are your thoughts on this new workstation card? ATI's pressrelease ATI's FIRE GL X1 128-bit full floating point pipeline architecture now makes it possible to compile higher level shaders from leading digital content creation (DCC) software such as Aliaswavefront's Maya
hoopbuddy
I use the FireGL 8800 and the Quadro4 900 and they're both pretty fast, but the Nvidia drivers are more robust. Both work fine on Linux and Win2k which is nice, but the FGL's dual monitor support is weaker with Houdini than the Quadro's. The GL X1 is too new to have the shader stuff supported yet, though with OpenGL 2 there should be cool things afoot.
Mistyk
Thanks for your response. Do you have the latest drivers for the 8800? (Sorry if that is an offense, I just want to make sure.) Some claim that the most recent drivers remedy virtually every flaw of the 8800. Do you agree? Can you comment on the performance difference between the 8800 and the 900XGL - mainly in wireframe mode, but also in shaded mode? There are people who hold the 8800's wireframe performance superior to that of the 900XGL, while they say that the latter wins in shaded mode. What do you think? Lastly, can you find any difference in the visual quality of the output of either card? Any artifacts or blurriness?
