First attempt at grass

Part of a project to make a garden. I'm not using fur at the moment but may switch at some point. I'm mainly going for static images and figuring my way around things.

Any pointers to good info about materials would be appreciated as the hardest thing about setting this up was getting the grass material to not look terrible but I'm still not happy with the way it looks.

Oh, and I meant to ask, is it possible to add VEX Global Illumination to add ambient occlusion to something like this that uses the material to 'shape' the curves?
