overriding parameters for sprite materials in H11

Hi, so I was trying to put together a sprite setup, just running the sprite shelf tool on a particle system... everything's working fine until I try to use the material sop to point to /shop/sprite (since I want to override the base color map per sprite). the sprite bitmaps show up in the render, but then they are all spheres instead of squares. Since the sprite "material shader builder" contains the sprite procedural, there's no separate sprite procedural to point to in the "procedural shader" parameter on the object level.

Anyone figured out the correct workflow for something like this now that the material system has changed?
