It's to specify the individual record when the data that has more than 1 record available. An example is Impact data. When impacts are happening there can be more than one, so you'll see a list of them. recordNum allows you to pick which one you are interested in. Typically for Impacts you'd use dopnumrecords() to create a number of points equal to the number of records then use stamp() to iterate over all the records to generate points for each.
