pclaes
Here is how to do it: 1) Check out Wikipedia and youtube to decide what kind of earthquake you want. 2) Look at your reference and break it down into pieces (!) ... categorize it into different subjects: a)--> cracks in the ground --> dust from cracks c)--> what's on top? Any houses or trees, cars, roads, bridges,... water, perhaps a dam breaking...? 3) search odforce for: "crack", "fracture", "dust", "smoke", "pyroclastic", "destruction", "tree". Do a little research on the above, there are plenty of files floating around this forum. That should keep you busy for a while. When you have more specific questions like "What would be a good approach for tearing apart the asphalt on a road?" or "Should I use dops or particles for all of my destruction?" or a really useful one once you have figured out what elements will make up your effect: "Which elements would you do in Dops, which in pops and which in sops?" @Sam: What do you mean? Those three steps don't work?! -There goes the master plan .

digitallysane
how to use houdini to make earthquake That was quite easy in the good old days when Houdini came on a CD or tape accompanied by a few kilograms of printed documentation. All you had to do was to sit on a chair and let the documentation box fall on the floor from as high as possible. On contact, it resulted in a minor earthquake right inside your studio. That was the standard way of making earthquakes with Houdini, but it's not available in more recent versions. You need to switch to software that still comes with printed docs, like the Adobe CS suite for example, to make earthquakes in 2011.
