Alembic Groups and Material Assigenment - Maya to Houdini

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a question related to the Maya->Houdini Alembeic workflow.

I have a big Ship with many objects modeled in Maya, the 100 different textures were made in Mari.

Now I want to bring it all together in Houdini. I imported the model wich worked perfect as a Alembic Archive.

Can I only assign Materials via dropping them on the prefered object in the Viewport? Because otherwhise I have to dive in into the many subsets in the AlmbicArchive, till I hit the geo node were i can assign the shader?

This method is a total pain, I have a chain for example with 300 pieces. When i select the alembic node in wich all the other nodes(chainparts) are, I can't assign the shader for all parts.

Then i tried to import the object with the alembic Sop. Worked great but i discoverd there are no groups included? Is there a way to include them when exporting from maya?

Would be really great if someone could give me a few tips on the best workflow. Especially for Models with many objects and different textures.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Cheers Martin
