Merging Two Gdp's?

so, I have a two input SOP... I duplicate both sources into separate gdps, do some stuff & want to output the result which contains data from both gdps... the code looks something like this:

  GU_Detail* gdp2;
  gdp2 = new GU_Detail;

  duplicateSource(0, context);
  duplicateSource(1, context, gdp2);
  
  // stuff

  gdp->merge(gdp2);

but the merge isn't happy (doesn't compile).

anyone have a hint to keep me from digging through headers all day?
