Need help signing materials to HDA modifier in 3ds max

I have an HDA who's whole point is to be fast and extremely user friendly, it works live based off of curves so I must have it as an HDA modifier of a curve in 3ds max.

I realized recently that material assignment via hemax_material attrib only works on HDA objects and I was hoping someone has a workaround.

My only other option is to somehow script an extra window in 3ds max which will have to read some user selections in the HDA and give a set of materials to choose from based on that.

Help would be greatly appreciated! and would save me probably 100 hours of experiential work cause this is extremely undocumented.
