photex
Hi folks, On my laptop I have a Quadro FX go700 that is reasonably well performing considering my machine would (and does) overheat and die if I ever worked with a scene that would cause the card to totally chunder. I'm putting together a new PC (because of above mentioned overheating) and I don't really have much money so it's a slim new machine but I've made sure there is a good upgrade path and that I put my money in the foundation and not fanciness. What remains to buy for this machine is a video accelerator and now that I'll be on a desktop there are many many options. I'll be using Linux (and Houdini obviously) and I figured, stick with nvidia since their driver support is second to none. My question is if I can only afford $150 - $200 for a new quadro would it be worth it to try and get at least a midrange card off of ebay instead of buying an entry level card new? Is the performance difference *that* big between an FX540 and FX1400 for instance? Because if it's not then I'd much rather buy a cheaper new entry level card and save up and buy a more powerful card later. Any advice is appreciated. cheers! photex
I received some good advice reminding me that the graphics card is only for interactivity and wont help me render or run simulations, so I'm just going with a new Quadro fx540 which I ended up finding for $135 w00t.
