Only, the help suggests that this is already in effect, "Drag the box in the center to move across the view plane in any direction". That is exactly what I want. If the plane is displayed, the transformer will attempt to move along the plane by default meaning you have to hold the Alt key to move vertically when transforming from the center. Sorry for such a simple question, i got frustrated. So I couldn't get the grid to stay visible while still being able to translate like this?
