Less Languid Fluid...?

Hi,

I'm working on a shuttle launch shot (aka http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0mftrFD7X4) and am having trouble making fluids/pyro volumes/whatever.. move that fast. I've tried all the forces, pumps, etc. that I can think of, but I just can't get the volume to skid across the ground the way that first burst does. I'm thinking, there must be a good workflow for this. Should I be animating the shape of my emitter? Animating my volume container? Any good tuts out there. The "overviews" and "intros" on sidefx.com give a good explanation of the nodes, but barely even gloss over controlling the volumes themselves (the ones I've found so far anyway)...

Thanks
