Displacement (Not shader based)

Hello all,

I was wanting to displace a grid geometry with a height map from sattelite telemetry. I found that this is not at all straight forward. Lots of shader based displacement stuff but I was hoping to find a way to displace the actual geometry of a grid by a map. Does anyone have a tip to do this? I'd really appreciate a pointer of two. Thank you
