FBX Export for Apprentice HD?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Apologies if this is not the right forum to ask this:

Does anyone know if there's a way round the lack of FBX export from Houdini Apprentice HD?

This is an essential feature for me as I do all of my compositing in Nuke and need to be able to work any 3D models, animations, particle/fluid systems etc inside Nuke. This is particularly essential when I'm matchmoving, having tracked my shot and setup the camera scene in Nuke, I need to ensure I can reliably take my 3D elements from Houdini into Nuke to comp into the scene.

I'm aware that I can export the obj or geo files, and that works great for still images. I can texture and comp to my hearts content in Nuke this way. Everything works perfectly! When it comes to animation however, be it model/character or fluids/particles/collisions etc, I need a method of getting everything into Nuke, whilst not flattening to a 2D file.

Any ideas? I'm hoping someone's way ahead of me and already created a homemade script for this very occasion! I tried one called 'fromHoudini2Nuke' and couldn't get it to work. Installed it on the menu bar to no avail, just greeted by error messages each time I tried to export! Maybe I didn't install it correctly?

Frustrating times, lol.

Thanks in advance :)

It might be so that HD users don't export to FBX and then back into commercial Houdini licenses.

:( Thought so. How's a guy to learn? lol. (Not that I don't appreciate the work SideFX have done to provide us 'starving artists' with Apprentice/HD as it is)
