alternative to polyreduce?

I've got a pretty robust fluid processing/rendering pipeline set up in Houdini now, importing meshes/particles from Naiad, the only real bottleneck being the polyreduce node I'm running on the meshed fluid surface to bring it down to manageable levels for rendering.

It's taking me up to 8 minutes a frame to polyreduce 5-million-poly meshes, which is longer than it took to sim them or mesh them in the first place. The memory footprint is also pretty huge, which prevents me running a frame-per-core on one machine.

Does anyone know of a fast external poly-reduction tool, one that's ideally fairly easy to integrate into a houdini pipeline? (although I'm guessing hoping for .bgeo support is wishful thinking :-P)
