Macha
Surely not. That guy looks like he's been in vfx for just a couple of years.
Andz
I've been thinking these days about this post, and how successful would SideFX be with this job offer. From what I gather talking around, mostly everyone involved with Houdini at work aim or already act in big VFX productions. The list of interns that worked at Sesi and now are now hired by fx houses in London, NZ, etc. shows that as well. Is it a waste of resources and time invested in interns at Sesi, knowing that with the first opportunity they will leave for a fx house? Do some interns actually stay at Sesi afterwards? And how about the odds of having a senior TD opting to leave the big productions to settle at Sesi's office? I just wrote this out of curiosity, I was thinking about writing directly to Mr. Magee but maybe it would be cool to hear what everyone thinks about it. I for one, have never intended to work on big fx houses. During my life I've had a few offers to relocate around for certain productions but It was never my type of work. After the first 6 or 7 years working with crazy deadlines, after hours and clients/bosses, I opted out for dealing more with research, lecturing and developing CG than actual production and how knows, if I'm lucky, have a normal life after 6pm. **edit Actually, what I think I was trying to say is that, in my opinion working at a developer's office and working in production are so different, that I hardly find it possible for one person from one area to actually get satisfied in another. Or maybe I'm mistaken? Edited March 7, 2012 by Andz
robert.magee
The Senior In-House TD position is designed to bring real-world production experience into sidefx to help us build appropriate tools and workflows. While our developers do a great job already, there is a need for someone with lots of "on-the-floor" experience who can help us drive the tools of the future. We often get this kind of information from customers and beta testers but feel that an in-house resource will allow for a more focused approach. The interns are a different situation. With interns our #1 goal is to give them an opportunity to spend time with Houdini, prepare demo reel material and then go out and work in the industry. We get the benefit of young enthusiastic artists learning their craft and they get a chance to rub elbows with the people who make Houdini. We have hired a few interns if the appropriate role pops up but that is not our main goal. Getting more knowledgable resources into the Houdini community is priority number one. Andz
Thank's for the response Robert, that clears things up about what you guys expect from the interns position. And coming to think about it, I'd guess that a TD's job does look more alike, being a in house developer or at the fx shop than an artist's position would. Hazoc
Actually, what I think I was trying to say is that, in my opinion working at a developer's office and working in production are so different, that I hardly find it possible for one person from one area to actually get satisfied in another. Or maybe I'm mistaken? I would think working as a senior TD at SESI includes doing funky prototypes and some promo art. Doesn't sound bad at all compared to trying to understand what 5 different assistant directors are saying at 3 a.m.
