dynamoanders
Hi guys. I´m trying out some lightning, shading and rendering in Mantra. Here´s a scene I did, doing some test renderings with Motion Blur and DoF, also added some displacement and blurred reflections on the shaders. Lightning was done with arealights. First I tried to do it with the Micropolygon renderer, but then I had to crank the sampling quality on the arealights way up, then I switched to PBR and that did not need as many sampling quality in the area lights I tried to do a similar setup that I would do in Maya and Vray, but maybe I´m doing something wrong here? Maybe there´s a better way of lightning or rendering? What do you think? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks //Anders test_rendering.hipnc

There are some free real good tutorials here https://vimeo.com/user2030228 from Peter Quint in order to understand how houdini works, he covers everything you need for a basic rendering, shaders, render engines, motion blur, dof, passes etc.
dynamoanders
Hi cparliaros. Thanks for your reply, there is nothing wrong with my renders, but I was more wondering if there is some way to optimise the renders (if you could shave off one minute from each render, that would make a big impact if there are hundreds of frames etc...). Any suggestions would be good :-). I have already watched Peter´s tutorials, which are awsome by the way, and am quite familiar with how you render in Houdini and Mantra (micropylogon, PBR, passes etc), but I am trying to up my production quality, and was wondering if there´s a way to optimise my renders? With this resolution and these settings, I´m getting around 2 1/2 minute a frame (on a pentium I7), and I where wondering if there´s some how optimise it? I know that it is expensive with arealights, displacement, MB and DoF, but that´s why I wanted to test it out. Maybe I can have the keylight as an arealight and spotlights as the rimlight and fillights? I just trying to learn Mantra, shading and rendering, and how to get the most speed out of it. Thanks //Anders
