Is foam shading always point render? "2012" aircraft carrier s

If you check this famous 2012 aircraft carrier shot

How would you approach the foam for that shot? For instance, the one around the carrier. "Just" simulate millions of points and throw a render of that?

Obviously, the recent SESI´s tutorial by Scott Keating on the Waterfall render helps, but I still find it tough to get such "body" of particles.

Your thoughts?

That was scanline wasn't it? If I remember rightly...

You could cheat some of it with geo deformation and shading it white, you can get away with quite a lot doing that. But all the big curl over spray would be particles. A looooad of them.

I might be wrong of course, maybe it was all comp ;)

The cloudy style foam like rf renderkit cloud shader is an amazing effect.I look forward a houdini version for flip particles.
