getting alpha through a refracting matte object.

I have a water shader setup using the Mantra Surface preset. I have an object half submerged in the water and I wanted to render with the water having a matte material on it, but have the alpha of the submerged object refracted through the water. You can do this type of thing with vray by setting "Affect Channels" in the refraction to "All channels"

I'm not sure how to implement this.
