Sierra62
using the tutorials provided by sidefx is a great place to start. It is where I started learning Houdini. I also learned a lot from the online school FXPHD. Working with effects it does require a knowledge of modelling, texturing, lighting, etc. These skills are important to have a base knowledge of, and how they fit into the pipeline. For example, if you are doing a destruction sim, it is crucial to understand texturing and UV's so that if during your sim the textures are distorting or shifting, you will have the knowledge to fix it. The modelling knowledge is important for modifying geometry for fracturing or being a fluid collider. It is also nice to be able to Model a scene to be able to plus your sim, it makes your demo reel look more complete. The lighting and rendering is very important to getting your shot to the next point in the pipeline. There is also a lot that can be cheated with good lighting, and rendering techniques. Understanding compositing is very nice too if you plan on working in production. Just start at the beginning of the first steps lessons from sidefx and go through them in order. Afterwards you should be well rounded enough that you can focus more on the effects after.
