Particle/Point shadows

Is there a way to allow point self-shadowing such as Krakatoa or Fury do in Maya? I'm a hobbyist and have been away for a while but am getting back into 3D and Houdini :) 

 

Also, I never had a firm understanding of how DOPS pass/read/use the data system, such that you see in the details view. Can anyone point out any good resources text or video for that? Thanks.
