Gabor kernels, "oil painted" COP convolution filter

I would like to achieve "painted" effect in Houdini. Such as this effect:



I want to set those "stroke directions" to volume velocities, to drive particles and traces, as I did here with Pyro.

Please, am I right, that I have to use Convolute COP and Gabor kernels at different sizes and angles? Please, can Houdini help me somehow to generate these stroke directions? Is there any "analysis OP" of whom I don't and should know?
