channel referencing distributed sims

Shouldn’t I be able to channel reference the “fluid_splice” node of a distributed sim into the import_flattank node of a flattank_fluid network? Maybe I’m thinking of this wrong, but when I do that I get nothing. The .sc files are all there, and I can see them in the distribute network once the sim is done. But my understanding was that for rendering I still want to use the “flattank_fluid” and “flattank_interior”, just that instead of being dynamic they reference the cache files. 
 
what am I doing wrong? thanks!
