Issues With Procedural I3d Rendering

I am looking into directly rendering an i3d file by using the objects render option "render geometry as > procedural > i3d" and specifying an i3d file to be rendered. But in my first tests i am hitting a wall because when i render a simple i3d file the first 30 buckets render in about 15 seconds then it slows to a halt as only 1 or 2 buckets will render in the next 5 minutes. The i3d file is rendered at a cubic res of 32 and is based on bunch of metaballs with a simple turbulence added.

Has anybody used this before and come up against the issue? Can it be worked around or is it a bug?
