Exporting Motion Vectors from animation

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am trying to get a 3-dimensional grid of motion vectors (velocity field) out from an animated character in Houdini and into numpy arrays in Python. With the current setup I am able to export the data and re-import it into Houdini, but I'm having a tough time efficiently getting it into Python.

So far my best attempt was to export it as a .VDB file from Houdini and then import it using the pyopenVDB module, but the files don't seem to have any data in them when I import (I exported a test sphere .vdb using the vdbFromPolygons node and it imported into Python just fine).

Any suggestions?
