Looking For College Advice, And Then Some

Hello all, this is something that i've been on a dilemma with myself, for a long time i've wanted to persue vfx , but never knew anything about it, mainly because of my age, but as of more than a year i've been learning vfx by myself, books, DVDs, all that. I've also been in a college here where i live studying Graphic Arts, it isn't what i want, but the place is supposed to bring a Animation degree, which, has just recently started, but i've have yet to learn something new. I've been working on projects on myself, but for reasons, i can't seem to finish them, strange motivation reasons. I've recenetly looked into changing college and going to study Computer Science, but i've researched into the options here, and all of the courses, are extremely dated. So i've been looking at going to college to the states, mainly SCAD, since it looks like it has a very solid vfx course, though i've yet taken the SAT, since we use another test here in P.R.. So here comes my dilemma, would it be worth it, going to SCAD, take out a bunch of loans to study, i've been wanting to, but my father doesn't seem to want me to go, thinks i'll be in huge debt forever. So i'm looking for some advice, is SCAD worth it, i'm mostly interested in the vfx animation and compositing area, though i know both are kinda vast areas.

Guess kinda long post, anyway, thanks in advance.

I went to SCAD and I am sure there are a few others on this board who went to SCAD as well. I had a very succesful experience there and I was not disapointed with facilities nor did I have a problem with lack of opportunities/classes. After awhile you realize that you can only learn so much from the professors, so you have to branch out, take some ind studies and almost create your own focus within your major, then you can create what you want and find what you really want to do in this industry. I did exactly that and I (and others who took this same approach) landed some pretty sweet jobs directly outa SCAD. Of course we were the nerds who almost lived there 24/7 :)

Not to be too cliche, but you will get the most outa anything what you put into it.

On another note, a LOT of students @ SCAD are on financial aid and the school sometimes gives out scholarships like candy, if you hit it right. Give em a call, you will get bombarded with info if you sign up for their admissions mailing list. Its worth a shot.

I'm friends with at least four scad grads and though I can't speak for the school, I can certainly tell you that these guys are great and are all working(rhythm and hues, digital domain, and assemble co) .

Another thing I can recommend is going for an internship at side effects after you finish your schooling. Three out of the four people I'm referring to above were interns at side effects and I can think of at least three people that I work with here at imageworks who were once sesi interns. It's a great way to learn and make contacts

ah thank GOD for internships. A student's only pass into the industry. Do as many of them and you will definately find a good gig.

SCADs cool too, though I am from the AAU, but there are many scad students I have met than from other schools. I like aau, its here in san francisco, close to big companies and a good hard working body of students.

Hello all, just updating a bit, and it seems that things are now gonna get interesting, just came across 2 people that are in need of a vfx driven person, gonna be meeting with them soon, finally things are not gonna be so frustrating here.

Thanks for the input,

Ricardo

Hi Ricardo,

One year into my electronics technical degree, I found out about a film course that has computer graphics as a major. My dad wanted me to finish the electronics technical degree but I told myself "It's now or never" and it is one of the best decisions in life I've made.

I've never been to a college before but contact the schools like the others said. You'll never know until you tried or asked.

In the meantime, all the best with the meeting!

Cheers!

steven
