point light with six-sided shadow maps

I've got lots of point lights in a gas volume, and I'd like them to throw out shadows in all directions. Obviously the way to do this is to either raytrace the shadows or have one depth map per axis of the light. It looks like you can't really do this with six spot lights because of their overlapping cones. I've never used the light template before, so I'm wondering what I would need to do to build this up into what I want to accompish? In other words, how do I make a point light whose shadows mimic Maya's point light shadows?
