"vector" displacement

Hi all,

I'm messing around with the vector displacement maps that modo can generate and I'm having an initially hard time trying to understand the principle behind such a thing.

Well, that is, what I thought was happening isn't. :)

The map created from Modo is a 16-bit rgb uncompressed tif. I'd attach the test image but it's rather large. I'd be happy to put it up on my website if you'd like.

Since the default is 0.5 per per channel I'm assuming it's not too different from a tangent space normal map, but since they look so different I'm certain that my assumption is incorrect and generally speaking I'm not getting a 1 to 1 translation in my tests.

Does anyone have any insight for me, or at least know off-hand a good pdf or webpage on the subject?
